A truly American story about an unsung hero

“The horse is a great equalizer. He doesn’t care how good-looking you are, or how rich you are, or how powerful you are – he takes you for how you make him feel.”

Buck Brannaman is a true American cowboy who grew up with in an abusive, rodeo show household and has since gone on to become one of the greatest horsemen of our time. Although he had to overcome tremendous personal odds, he spends nine months out of the year traveling the USA “helping horses with people problems.”

BUCK is a documentary about a man who works with horses to overcome their issues and the path that got him there.Brannaman’s intention is to inspire, motivate and teach through principles of respect, partnership and trust rather than anger, fear and intimidation.

“Your horse is a mirror to your soul, and sometimes you may not like what you see. Sometimes, you will.”

BUCK’s story showcases Brannaman from his abusive childhood to his widely successful approach to working with horses. He has been called a “real-life horse whisperer” and The Horse Whisperer actually brought him in while filming in 1998 to help with the horses on set.Buck Brannaman takes the lessons from the violence of his upbringing and teaches people to communicate with their horses through leadership and sensitivity, not punishment. BUCK was created to move people to make changes in how they deal with horses and life's challenges and I’m so glad it was.It opens our eyes on the true meaning of horsemanship and partnership.A bond with a horse is a gift and you need to show them how much you appreciate their companionship rather than their use.

BUCK has won awards from Sundance 2011 (U.S. Documentary Audience Award), Full Frame Doc Film Festival 2011 (Audience Award), Crossroads Film Festival 2011 (Best Documentary Award), Seattle International Film Festival 2011 (Official Selection and 2nd Runner Up for Best Documentary Golden Space Needle Award), Provincetown International Film Festival 2011 (HBO Audience Award for Best Documentary Feature), Nantucket Film Festival 2011 (Official Selection/Best of Fest), HotDOCS Film Festival 2011 (Top Ten Audience Favorite).
